                                        Who We Are
Brentwood Self-Defense Academy offers a comprehensive martial arts training program with a focus on practical self-defense. Our curriculum includes elements of Japanese, Filipino, Chinese and Indonesia martial arts. In addition to empty hand training there is a heavy emphasis on edged weapons training (Martial Blade Concepts and Counter Blade Concepts) as well as Eskrima, the Filipino weapons system that utilizes single stick, double stick and stick/knife techniques.
Much of our empty hand self-defense is based around the Japanese martial art known as Jiu-Jitsu. The term Jiu-Jitsu means “gentle art”. That term can be misleading since in reality Jiu-Jitsu is a combat art that is used by many military and law enforcement organizations around the world. The art allows the practitioner to use various levels of force ranging from control and compliance to lethal force in dealing with an adversary.

“Martial Blade Concepts” is a system of edged weapons self-defense developed by renown martial arts and weapons expert Michael Janich. With over thirty years of martial arts experience that includes training in the United States and numerous countries in the Far East Michael Janich developed this very efficient and effective edged weapons system geared towards using a lethal weapon in a non-lethal manner that is more legally and morally justifiably in a modern society and urban environment. MBC has been taught to military, law enforcement, security personnel as well as civilians throughout the United States and Europe.

Knowing how to use an edge weapon as a self-defense tool is one dimension of the skill sets you need to increase your survivability in a life and death encounter. “Counter Blade Concepts” builds on the skill and knowledge you acquire during your Jiu-Jitsu and edged weapons training. Training in CBC enhances your ability to deal with an armed attacker. Rather then learning numerous new and difficult to master techniques CBC takes the fundamental principles developed via your Jiu-Jitsu/MBC training and adapts them to effectively countering an attacker armed with a weapon.

One of the most effective methods of developing hand speed and proper foot work is training in the Filipino martial arts commonly known as Arnis, Eskrima and Kali. The martial arts of the Philippines were developed over hundreds of years and focused on using common farming tools as weapons of warfare. During WWII these techniques were proven in actual combat against the Japanese army that had invaded the islands of the Philippines. Modern Eskrima training uses rattan sticks of various lengths are used in drills that increase empty hand speed and agility.
